If you’re around church long, you’ll likely hear about “firstfruits.” This traditionally refers to the first of a crop that is recommended to be offered to God. That is generally taken a step further to make tithing relevant for today.

Romans 11:16 (CSB) “Now if the firstfruits offered up are holy, so is the whole batch. And if the root is holy, so are the branches.” (Don’t worry, I’m not going into a tithing message here, although I do believe it is still important.)

Paul is clearly making reference to a tree starting out right as a seedling and then going on to grow strong and sturdy (as he goes on to talk about branches being grafted together and believers being divided or grafted).

My focus here is the last part, “If the root is holy, so are the branches.”

How did you start your day today? Did you pause for a moment to invite God in? Did you open His word to find something motivational? Starting with a fresh, solid, Biblical foundation on a daily basis is how we will BECOME EVER MINDFUL!

Ecclesiastes 2:26 “For to a person who is good in His sight He has given wisdom and knowledge and joy.”

John 10:10 “…I came that they may have life, and have it abundantly.”

Jeremiah 29:11 “For I know the plans I have for you,” declares the LORD, “plans to prosper you and not to harm you, plans to give you hope and a future!”

Isaiah 40:31 “Yet those who wait for the LORD Will gain new strength; They will mount up with wings like eagles, They will run and not get tired, They will walk and not become weary.”

Romans 8:37 “No, in all these things we are more than conquerors through him who loved us.”

There is something common in all these and many other scriptures (taken from an NIV Bible); GOD IS MORE THAN ENOUGH!

It is a great thing to be content with life and with God but we must get away from the mindset of complacency. I believe God always wants to bless us MORE, teach us MORE, and even enable us MORE! Never settle for less than what God has intended!

Take a moment right now to stop and pray that God will show you areas where He wants more for you. (Then wait in silence for a minute so you can hear Him when He tells you.)

From Chapter Nine

I want to be more intentional with putting clips from my book Becoming Ever Mindful in this blog. This one is from chapter nine which is called “Knowing When it’s God.” I used to work in the mall at a little kiosk where I sat and sold ice cream all night. Almost every night I would see a guy walk through the stores with his friends.  He seemed to be the leader of the pack. He was Mexican and always wore incredibly baggy, sagging jeans along with extremely oversized shirts. I always had the feeling that I should pray for him. So I did. Every time I saw him walking and laughing with his friends I prayed, “God, I don’t know anything about that young man but you do. You know his situation. You know his home life. You know his future. I pray that he comes to know you and leads his friends to you.” Quite a few years later I was leading a drama team at a church we attended and the youth pastor asked me if I had met Manny. He described a guy he thought I would get along with and who wanted to start helping in the youth group. He had just recently left the life of gangs and violence and received Christ. I was pretty excited because I knew he was into rap and I had done some rapping and stomp routines in college. The youth pastor introduced me and wouldn’t you know it was the guy I had prayed for so long ago. I kind of laughed when I described all of this to him. I’m not saying I’m the reason he came to Christ but I do believe it helped. And how amazing was it that God would allow me to see the fruit of my labor with my own eyes! Friends, today believe that God is using you, even though it may seem insignificant!
