Remember this Christmas to look on the bright side, the side where the sun is…the side where the Son is!
For unto us a Child is born,
Unto us a Son is given;
And the government will be upon His shoulder.
And His name will be called
Wonderful, Counselor, Mighty God,
Everlasting Father, Prince of Peace.
Shalom is a word that is thrown around quite a bit in religious circles…but what is it? The Strong’s Concordance describes the original Hebrew word in the following way: wholeness, completeness, soundness, health, prosperity, well-being, peace, cessation from war, victory over ones enemy. It appears in the Old Testament over 200 times!
The first time the word “Shalom” is used in the Bible is in Judges 6:23 where God is speaking peace into a very difficult situation. This story is very interesting because we see Gideon, a common farmer, and his people strongly oppressed by the Midianites. Judges 6:2 says, “Because the power of Midian was so oppressive, the Israelites prepared shelters for themselves in mountain clefts, caves and strongholds.” Later, the Bible records that the Israelites would plant their crop and the Midianites would come and take it! When the angel appears to Gideon, he calls him a mighty warrior.
God is in the identity-changing business and He got a hold of Gideon, who must have felt helpless, and spoke peace into him. You should read the entire story in Judges 6 and 7 to see how it ends.
Martin Luther once said, “I have held many things in my hands, and have lost them all; but whatever I have placed in God’s hands, that I still possess.”
You may be in a troublesome situation but God offers peace if you rest in Him and trust His timing. This does not always mean that He will remove you from the situation, but He is ALWAYS faithful and may have something else up His sleeve.
God is calling you to a place of peace, are you gonna answer?
