I began a mini-series yesterday about the Holy Spirit. This week, I spoke about His jobs. It’s important that we don’t let the Easter story end just because Easter day has passed. After spending three and a half years with them, Jesus told His disciples in John 14:28, “You heard me say, ‘I am going away and I am coming back to you.’ If you loved me, you would be glad that I am going to the Father, for the Father is greater than I.” Later, He said, “But very truly I tell you, it is for your good that I am going away. Unless I go away, the Advocate will not come to you; but if I go, I will send him to you.” (John 16:7)
So the disciples were supposed to be glad that He was going away? The reason is because that was the only way that the Holy Spirit could be released upon all people. After the resurrection, we read the following: “Again Jesus said, ‘Peace be with you! As the Father has sent me, I am sending you.’ And with that he breathed on them and said, ‘Receive the Holy Spirit.’” (John 19:21+22)
At that moment, our Parakletos (a Greek word meaning one who pleads another’s cause before a judge as an advocate) who we know as the Holy Spirit was given to all mankind. Yes, as a believer, you have access to Him at all times! This is important because His jobs include (but are not limited to) the following:
- Conviction (John 16:8)
- Comforting us (Advocating for)
- Reminding us of God’s word (John 14:26)
- Interceding for us (Romans 8:26)
When Jesus was on the earth in the flesh, He was only one man who could only be accessed through a face-to-face encounter. Now, we are not limited to a specific time or location to access our God!!! Take comfort in the fact that, as a Christ-filled believer, you have 24-hour access to this helper! We could not have that if Jesus did not resurrect and ascend into heaven! Next week, I’ll talk about the fruit of the Spirit (Galatians 5)!!
